Within the partnership, we seek to improve the leadership and volunteering skills of all students through a variety of programmes. For primary school students we offer training for Playground Leaders and School Sports Organising Crews. For secondary students, the County Leadership Academy offers a great way for students to access volunteering opportunities and develop their leadership skills through accredited leadership courses. These students also have many opportunities to support the partnership at many of our events – so far this year, they have been amazing!
County Durham Leadership Academy
The Leadership Academy and Champions Programme is a programme for 13-19 yr old students to support, develop and reward students in their sport leadership and volunteering journey.
Congratulations to the students submitted their applications for the Leadership Champions and Academy programmes and have been accepted onto the programme. The Leadership Academy looks at supporting new or previously experienced young volunteers in getting volunteering hours and providing recognised training. We are currently looking at organising NGB courses for February half term, which the students can do FREE of charge. Students who achieve a certain number of hours will be rewarded at out celebration evening later in the year!
The Leadership Champions programme is already well under way. The latest workshop, ‘Using Technology in Your Coaching’ took place at Finchale Training College which the students found very helpful.
Some of our schools have been busy developing their playground to make it a more active and structured area for their children to enjoy. Schools have been supported by the partnership in designing playground resources, organising equipment, zoning areas within their playground and developing playground leaders. There are some fantastic examples of active playgrounds throughout the partnership and we look forward to continuing working with schools on the Active Playground programme.
Our Year 5 & 6 Playground leaders in several of our primary schools have enjoyed training on how to become a sports leader within their school setting. The children have learnt how to organise and lead activities and have also had the opportunity to develop their team building skills.
The leaders are now actively involved in some or all of their break time activities within their school and some are planning on delivering sessions within the curriculum to EYFS and KS1. A massive well done to the leaders and to the schools who have been so supportive and have encouraged and embedded the leader’s roles within their school life.
School Sports Organising Crew
School Sports Organising Crews are groups of young people who work together to develop, organise and promote school sport. They support teachers to make their school sport the best it can be by organising and delivering events and clubs that students want. Ultimately their role is to promote and motivate your school to get involved in sport.
Our School Sports Organising Crew training will take place at Kelloe Primary School on 1st February 2018. This training will introduce the students to what a SSOC is and how they run. They will all be assigned different roles in the crew including Festival Leader, Media Leader, Research Leader & Head of Crew.
Festival & Competition Leaders
A big thank you from the whole partnership team for all the sports leaders who have supported us at our festivals and competitions. We have been very impressed by the skills of the leaders and they have made our lives a lot easier. Thank you – the events would not be the same without you!
